Taiwan 27/5 (Day 1) Daily Reflection

The island of Singapore gradually disappeared out of our line of sight as the plane flew towards unknown adventures. That marked the beginning of our amazing six days in Taiwan.

In the late afternoon, we bounded out of the airport in a happily dizzy state, taking in the fresh sight and sounds of the foreign land. The air was fizzling with excitement. Our coach brought us to our first destination-Taiwan Public TV Station.

It was an eye-opener; a wondrous place full of state-of-the-art equipment. We were introduced to the elusive gears of a TV station and the myriad of TV channels in Taiwan, including those in aboriginal dialects. We even had the opportunity to witness a filming of a show. Television has always been a steadfast part of our lives, but we had never ventured behind the scenes before. The astonishing hard work and effort put in behind shows amazed us. Everyday shows are definitely more than that meets the eye.

Not only did we acquire knowledge of how a TV station operates, we also gained meaningful insights on television's impacts on culture. Television is not just a mere mode of entertainment. Being an ubiquitous media, its pervasive influence on society is not to be overlooked. Next time we watch a programme, we would certainly be viewing it in a different light.

Further on into the tour we got to know more about the hakka culture such as the different meanings of our Chinese last names. Just like that the tour ended we thanked the guide from the station and made our way to a buffet steamboat dinner, which was absolutely delicious.

Finally, we carried our tired bodies to the hotel where we had our final reflection, debrief and finally lights out. This would conclude our first day in the city of Taipei.
